Vinous, March 2017: Domaine André Kientzler

In his article, “Alsace: The 2015s and Late-Released 2014s”, Ian d’Agata of Vinous Media praises the 2015 selection from Domaine André Kientzler:

2015 Riesling d’Alsace-90+ pts

“Bright straw-green. Delicately ripe tropical fruit aromas and flavors are complicated by stone fruit and minerals. Finishes long with sneaky concentration. Outstanding entry-level Riesling.”

2015 Riesling Grand Cru Osterberg-94 pts

“Pale straw-green. Enticing aromas of apple, pear and jasmine. Clean, rich and very harmonious, offering a glyceral mouthfeel to the floral and orchard fruit flavors. Showcases lovely balance, outstanding density and noteworthy length. Kientzler’s Osterberg grapes grow in three parcels of varying age, but this wine (labeled Osterberg Grand Cru) is made with only the oldest Riesling vines, those that are roughly 50 years old (the juice from the others is declassified into one of the lower-tier bottlings).”

2015 Muscat Grand Cru Kirchberg-91+ pts

“Pale straw-green. Aromatic herbs, lime, grapefruit pith and orange marmalade on the nose and in the mouth. Nuances of minerals and lime complicate the multilayered, complex, bright finish. This is still very young. Kientzler owns two parcels of 100 percent Muscat Ottonel planted in 1971 and 1978, and these old vines really deliver; this is on an entirely different quality level than the slightly disappointing entry-level Muscat wine I tasted this year.”
